SPECVLA watchtower/lookout and SPECVLVM mirror differ as much in gender as in meaning. For specula signifies the area of one looking out. Vergil, book X:
original: "utque leo, specula cum vidit ab alta / stare procul campis meditantem in proelia taurum."
And as a lion, when he has seen from a high lookout a bull standing far off in the fields, meditating on battle.
Speculum is that by which an image is rendered. M. Tullius in Against Clodius and Curio: "But, I believe, after a mirror was brought to you, you sensed that you were far from the beautiful." — Varro in Eumenides:
original: "sed nós simul adque in súmmam speculam vénimus, / vidémus populum Fúriis instinctúm tribus."
But as soon as we come to the highest lookout, we see the people goaded by the three Furies.
CONFITERI to confess and PROFITERI to profess/declare differ in this, that profiteri is a matter of will, confiteri is of necessity and being forced. We read this placed thus quite often. Cicero in For Manilius: "Here I not only confess, but I even profess." It is more honorable to profess than to confess.
VLCVS ulcer/sore and VVLNVS wound differ in this, that an ulcus is a malignancy covered and closed. Vergil, Georgics book III:
original: "quam siquis ferro potuit rescindere summum / ulceris os. alitur vitium vivitque tegendo;"
if anyone has been able to cut away with iron the surface of the ulcer, the defect is nourished and lives by being covered;
A vulnus is gaping and open. Vergil, book IX:
original: "produxi pressive oculos aut vulnera lavi, / veste tegens."
I have led out, or pressed my eyes, or washed the wounds, covering them with a garment.
