Altinæ cows from Altinum, Col. 6, 24. Harduinus wants it read as "Alpinæ" at Plin. 8, 45, p. 274. For he says, if they had their name from the Italian town of Altinum, about which Pliny 3, 18 writes, they would be called not "Altinæ," but "Altinates," as the logic of names requires, and Col. 7, 2 himself commends "Altinate" sheep. Bochardus has similar remarks in Hieroz. 1, 2, 29, who brings forward two passages from Varro and Gratius, by which the termination "Altinas," not "Altinus," is confirmed. Schöttg.
