ABBREVIATIONS.

We have rarely used the books collated by Quicherat for reasons set forth in the Adversaria, having appended notes that are very easy to understand. The Paris manuscript 7667, for which a fuller and far better collation exists in the book of Havet and Meylan, is indicated by the letter P wherever it is cited.

Dots placed in the context of the words of Nonius indicate missing half-feet in metrical scanning; triple asterisks indicate lacunae. Words to be deleted are marked with brackets, and material foreign to the memory of the books is marked in italics.

In the Commentaries, words shortened by a dot are read in their entirety in the manuscripts, apart from a few very well-known abbreviations. A line inserted indicates something omitted by us.

The remaining abbreviations are either common and trite, or appear such that they should detain no one.

*) By this abbreviation, all books known at the time are generally signified, and sometimes, where it would not be worth the effort to report the dittographies of others, only our own.

**) We have often used this note where the writing of the Wolfenbüttel manuscript could not be verified from elsewhere.
