Dissen reflects on a misunderstanding regarding editorial materials. He writes: "I did not understand the true cause; but later, when Huschke suddenly returned all the rest, yet retained these, I understood indeed, but too late. Because of the necessity of immediately beginning the work, there was no time to recover what had been lost. Thus, it happened that I could not use these aids."
These are the things I had to say so that the method of this edition might be clear. The images with which this edition is adorned were selected by Heyne; the explanation of them also proceeded from the same man.
