F = The Florentine book The primary 6th-century manuscript of the Digest..
F* = The primary writing of the same book, changed by the same scribe.
Fb = The secondary writing of the same book, originating from the primary scribe.
F¹ = The primary writing of the same book, changed by an ordinary corrector.
F² = The secondary writing of the same book, originating from an ordinary corrector.
F³ = The secondary writing of the same book, originating from a corrector who was not ordinary, but ancient.
Fac = The primary reading of the same book, later changed in ancient times.
Fem = The secondary reading of the same book, originating from an ancient emendation.
f = Writing of the same book originating from a corrector of the Bolognese era or even later.
G = In the title "On Determining Boundaries" finium regundorum a legal action for establishing boundaries, it signifies the example preserved among the ancient land surveyors (Writings of the Roman Land Surveyors, ed. Lachmann 1, 276 ff.).
N = Throughout the tenth book, it signifies the Neapolitan palimpsest manuscript of the Digest, IV. A. 8, from which the remaining parts contain fragments of the titles of its second, third, and fourth books.
POMM = In the forty-fifth book, it signifies
the Pommersfelden manuscript of the Digest, from which the remaining scraps pertain to the first title of that book.
R = The Berlin manuscript, formerly the Rosny manuscript, Latin fol. no. 269, 9th century, containing part of the first book of the Digest.
S = Books of the second order of the Digest, namely the Bolognese ones used by me and reviewed in the larger edition, especially the three following ones of the Digesta vetera Old Digest PVL:
P = The Paris manuscript no. 4450, 11th century, the oldest and best among the books of the second order of the Old Digest.
Pa = The primary writing of the same book, later changed.
V = The Vatican manuscript 1406, 11th century.
L = The Leipzig University manuscript 873, 12th century.
B = The Basilica a 9th-century collection of Byzantine law and their commentaries.
? = A larger question mark signifies that the reading of the book that immediately precedes it is doubtful; conversely, a smaller question mark ? similarly placed after a small letter attached to the letter F (for example Fb?) signifies that there is doubt not about the reading, but about the author of the reading, whether it is the first scribe or the corrector.
dett. = One or more of the Bolognese manuscripts of a later age, and likewise one or more editions before Haloander.
Hal. = Haloander’s edition of the Digest, Nuremberg, 1529.
