26, 15 and 25, 9 algedo; 28, 19 litigines and 64, 11 robicalia, etc.), of c and tRegarding l and r, cf. note at 65, 23 sq. (where 18 sq. is corrected): although what is read at 59, 3 praetoria for Plaetoria and 110, 7 glad. from grad. should be recalled to the exchange of words; but cf. 32, 17. (cf. corrections 25, 20; 29, 13 [!] and cum : tum, etc.).
But the fact that a and ae (æ) are swapped so often flowed from the form ɑ: cf. corrections 18, 18; 25, 2; 36, 18; 102, 22 and 7, 17; 15, 20; 16, 15 and 19 (?); 24, 8 and 21; 25, 9 etc.Whence also at 177, 2 we conjectured that instead of lima limabo, it should be corrected to lima lima⟨e⟩ with bo deleted as an addition.. Add a and e 83, 20; 93, 25; a and i 5, 12 (corr.); 16, 13; 18, 12; 111, 6; 134, 12 (corr.) [a and u 39, 6 and 8; 66, 3; 79, 11: where forms are swapped rather than letters]; regarding a and t see note to 174, 7. Furthermore, e and c 154, 29; e and o 16, 4; 27, 20 (corr.); 34, 13; 108, 3; [e and u 95, 11; 108, 15; 116, 5 from forms, not letters, likewise e and p 5, 5: but e and f (E:F) 38, 11]; o and c 16, 20 sq. = 17, 1. 11 (cf. 97, 10); hence also 57, 5 sq. oremus for geremus; i (often long) swapped with l and s (ſ) 40, 17; 119, 13; 143, 11, etc.Often, of course, the words rather than the letters are changed, as at 124, 11; 145, 13 sq., etc.; likewise i and f 148, 8, etc.; i and t 16, 7; 67, 2 (cf. note to 190, 20), etc.; u and n 134, 10 (corr.); 67, 6; 95, 15, etc. (cf. ut and in note to 97, 9; 172, 19); b and d 113, 17; 167, 12; 171, 22 (corr.); b and r 141, 1, etc. (but 106, 19 corium for cobium); c and p 10, 6 [along with metathesis, regarding which add 67, 5; and cf. at 42, 12]; 59, 9 (cf. note), etc.; c and r 20, 11 and 35, 2 sq. (corr.); 127, 14; 164, 10 and 15, etc.; c and s 19, 4; 23, 19; 67, 4, etc. (likewise s and r 101, 10; 151, 18; 157, 25, etc.: cf. note to 61, 4); d and p 19, 23; d and s 166, 25; n and m 114, 12; 177, 2; n and ti 142, 18; n and ri 109, 11 sq.; p and t 20, 5; p and r 24, 1.
But let these suffice: for we neither wished nor were able to exhaust this subject here, especially since other reasons often touch upon the confusion of letters. And we have already warned here and there regarding the permutation of the words themselves; in addition, ‘vicinity’, as Varro himself observed, counts for much. Therefore, 41, 7 sarcendo is written for sariendo because of the preceding sarculum, 178, 6 vocabulis for nominatibus because of the following word, 118, 12 ad obsenum because of the following words for Dossenum, and similar things. Additions also occur, such as nominatuum going into nominatiuum, ratio into oratio, abegi at 117, 15 into ab regia, virilia 134, 13 because of betacism confusion of 'b' and 'v' (cf. p. XXVII) becomes ⟨li⟩beralia and others of this kind and of other kinds.
Thus, indeed, if the Varronian text is...
