from this it is rather ill with us, or when it is done so that it may be better with us, from this it is rather worse with us. Whence this, unless because it can be well for man from God, whom he abandons by sinning, not from himself, according to whom he lives by sinning? That which we said, therefore, that two cities emerged from this, diverse among themselves and contrary, because some lived according to the flesh, others according to the spirit: it can also be said in this way, that some live according to man, others according to
9 God. For Paul most openly says to the Corinthians: For since there is emulation and contention among you, are you not carnal and walking according to man? That which is to walk according to man, therefore, is to be carnal, because man is understood from the flesh, that is, from a part of man. For he called the same ones above animal, whom he later called carnal, speaking thus: For who he says, of men knows the things that are of man, but the spirit of man which is in him? So also the things that are of God, no one knows but the
17 spirit of God. We, however, he says, have not received the spirit of this world, but the spirit which is from God, that we may know the things that are given to us by God; which also we speak, not in the learned words of human wisdom, but in those learned by the spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the animal man does not perceive the things that are of the spirit of God; for it is foolishness to him. To such, therefore, that is to the animal, a little later he says: And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual,
25 but as to carnal; both that and this by the same mode of speaking, that is, the whole from a part. And indeed from the soul and from the flesh, which are parts of man, the whole can be signified, which is man; and so the animal man is not one thing, the carnal man another, but both are the same thing, that is, a man living according to man; just as nothing other than men are signified, whether where it is read: From the works of the law not
