Ambrose; Petschenig, Michael · 1913

Behold, the hour comes that you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; but I am not alone, because the Father is with me? The Father is present, therefore; the Son of God is present; the ministers are present; the Cherubim a category of celestial beings and Seraphim a category of celestial beings are present, who say: Holy, holy, holy; the earth is full of your majesty. The world is full of holy virtutes powers/virtues, because it is full of wickedness; the globe is full of remedies, because it is full of snares. Do you think that Christ does not see you in a brothel, He whom the brothel sees entering? Do you think that He does not catch you in adultery, He who sees you thinking of adultery? Does He, who watches human errors, flee from walls; and does He, who observes the stage of crime, turn away from the secret of the crime? Or do you think that you enter the house of a prostitute for the first time only when you enter the brothel? You had already entered when the prostitute entered your thoughts; you had already entered when you entered with the stride of your mind to the desire of possessing a prostitute; you knocked at the doors of the brothel when you opened the eyes of your mind to the beauty of the woman you desired. And if you wish to hear the truth: how did Christ not see you in the brothel when He saw you, because by committing adultery in your heart, you made yourself the brothel? Finally, the Lord Jesus Himself says: Whoever looks at a woman to desire her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Why, then, are you so religious in opinion, when you are so shameful in crime?
13. But I agree with you, that Jesus might not wish to see you, might not wish to convict you because He does not wish to accuse you, and the angels might not wish to see; but the devil sees, who entered with you—indeed, who brought you in—and his ministers see, who have surrounded you lest you see the angels of God; Belial a name representing evil or wickedness sees.
