the legion, who impelled you, lest anyone call you back, lest anyone hold you. Do not think that a collusion of silence brings you any benefit, for the one who wants to have a partnership in your punishment. He is eager to see many who are like himself, and he has glory in the fact that he has made many lost. He himself is the inciter, he himself is the accuser; he entered into Judas, he impelled him to betrayal, he sent him to the noose. How many are going to say on that day against him: ‘You deceived us, you impelled us!’ Are you looking for an example? Take Eve, who said that the serpent was the author of her transgression. But he implicated her; he did not absolve himself, he to whom the Lord replied: ‘Did I not command you not to eat of the tree alone, which is in the midst of paradise?’ Therefore, he will answer many: ‘You heard the devil suggesting harmful things; could you not hear me commanding vital ones?’
14. And therefore let us work righteousness. For they that work iniquity have not walked in his ways. You have commanded your commandments to be kept exceedingly. Oh that my ways may be directed to keep your justifications! Then shall I not be confounded, when I look into all your commandments. It is not only, he says, that you commanded to keep your commandments, but also: to keep them exceedingly. When did He command this? He commanded Adam in paradise, indeed, to keep the commandments; but perhaps He had not commanded to keep them exceedingly, and therefore he fell, therefore he was bent by the voice of his wife, therefore he was deceived by the serpent, thinking that if he departed from the commandment in some small part, he would not err completely. But because he departed once from the path of the commandments, he abandoned the whole way; the serpent found him off the path and stripped him of everything, left him naked. Therefore the Lord, because he who was in paradise had fallen...
