PROLEGOMENA.

For indeed, when the words for he says and what dissension had been subscribed at the bottom of the page along with the beginning of the catchword a word at the bottom of a page anticipating the first word of the next page, as printers call it, where these leaves changed their place, they were annexed to those that precede. Nor did the confusion stop there. For thus the words what dissension ought to be found in the codices not at p. 14, 6, but at p. 17, 7, where the words but concerning the confirmation of birth now read, which in turn demand their place at p. 14, 6. Therefore, these were transposed among themselves by a new error *).

Since this matter seems most certain to me, I have not hesitated to present the writer's words transposed into the correct order. I wish it had also been possible to fill the very many larger and smaller lacunae with which Censorinus's book has been disfigured. But I had to indicate far more lacunae than was done before by editors, who often either did not notice them or tried to fill them with uncertain conjectures, from which I thought one must entirely abstain, not fearing the great number of asterisks by which I indicated the lacunae **). On the other hand, there is no lack of interpolations rashly [inserted] by librarians.
