Consequently, I am less surprised that the study of the liberal arts flourishes in Gallia France, and that the French Nobility now has this one pursuit: to learn from your example. For as each man approaches you in learning, he will undoubtedly please you most through the similarity of his studies and desires.

I wish that the glory you have brought to literature through this act of yours could be repaid to you by literature with equal favor! At the very least, as the only thing they can do, letters shall pay the debt of cultivation and honor owed to you through the perpetual commendation of your name and your achievements. You will never perform any act, at home or in the field, either gently or bravely, which they will not eagerly seize upon at once. Indeed, there are many things in you now worthy of praise: a nature that is teachable and—at the whim of Charles de Sainte-Maure, Duc de MONTAUSERII Montausier, your mentor—tender and flexible; character that is upright and lovable; a love and practice of Christian piety; and finally, the utmost courtesy and affability of speech toward everyone. Yet, a much greater future awaits when maturity shall make you a man and a leader of your father's armies.
