We children of Adam are conceived in impurity, formed in darkness, born with pain. Before our exit we burden our mothers, and when we wish to come into the world, we break our mothers, just as the otter reproduces a medieval belief that the otter's young eat their way out of the womb, killing the mother. The first voice we give of ourselves is weeping, and lamenting, because we come into the valley of tears. We live here a short time, and our life is full of unrest and the labor of misery. If we then die, we become food for worms, a stinking carcass and an abomination.
