The engraving displays the coat of arms of the Royal College of Physicians of London. The central shield shows a hand extending from a cloud to feel a pulse at the wrist, positioned above a pomegranate and framed by fleurs-de-lis. A female head sits atop the shield, surrounded by detailed acanthus leaf scrollwork. Below the shield, a mace and a clasped book rest on a tasseled cushion. Latin and Greek banners appear throughout. The bottom indicates the engraver as Alf. J. Downey, London.
The Greek text is a famous aphorism from Hippocrates: "Ὁ βίος βραχύς, ἡ δὲ τέχνη μακρή" (Life is short, [the] art is long).
