*Page 2, line 32; also 5, 18: ἐμπειρικούς empiricists, Targa. — empiricos in the codices. That reading had to be preserved. Likewise, at 160, 5, I perhaps ought to have read empiricos. The word empiricus is already found in Cicero, Acad. II, 39. 7, 4 neque [ad rem pertineat] quomodo nor does it pertain to the matter how, Targa. — The words ad rem pertineat (... pertinere Med. I, Vat. VIII) were added as a gloss; therefore, I removed them. The clause neque, etc., depends not on the preceding infinitive pertinere, as Targa wished, but on the verb intersit it matters/it is of importance. 10, 7 quam μέθοδον method Graeci vocant which the Greeks call a method, Targa. — The word Graeci is missing in Med. I and Vat. VIII and ought to be removed; for, as Targa himself noted, doctors who were either from Greece or from those regions where they spoke Greek, had the term μέθοδος method at the ready. — Likewise, at 2, 2, delete the words [apud Graecos] [among the Greeks]; the adverb olim formerly must be referred not only to the Greeks, but also to the Romans. 10, 21 efficiant they may effect, all books; read efficiunt they effect, and compare page 63, 2. 16, 1 genera [et sexus] et aetates kinds [and sexes] and ages, Targa. — These two words et sexus were added by some pedant. All the things prescribed in this and the other chapters of this book pertain equally to males and females. For in this book, as Targa himself warns, the discourse is not about patients but about frail people; and therefore the observations that their various bodies require are common to males and females. 16, 7 continenter continually, Targa. — incontinenter incontinently/without restraint Med. I, Vat. VIII; and rightly so. Targa chose to recall continenter from other codices; but wrongly.
