PREFACE.

No one deserved better for correcting the text, as it was published in the Aldine edition, than Janus Cornarius of Zwickau (died in the year 1558). He wrote a vast mass of corrections or conjectures on the margin of the Aldine edition, which, after his death, reached the library of the University of Jena, using the Latin version of Nicolaus. Through the generosity of the prefects of the Jena library, who kindly sent the copy of that edition here at my request, I was able to learn his emendations.

Therefore, no one after those who prepared the first edition used a codex to restore the text. From this it happened that the Galenic work is still falsely inscribed today as On the Use of the Parts in the Human Body original: "Περὶ χρείας τῶν ἐν ἀνθρώπου σώματι μορίων". But countless passages in which he praises his own work demonstrate that the author himself inscribed it as nothing other than On the Use of the Parts original: "Περὶ χρείας μορίων"; compare vol. I 409, 619. II 15, 92, 139, 182, 203, 217, 234, 271, 285, 291, 415, 420, 443, 548, 549, 568, 571, 591, 616, 880. IV 394, 611, 613, 643, 685, 686, 694. V 196, 209, 538, 540, 610, 647, 659. VI 64. VII 90, 91, 675. IX 843. X 118, 122. XV 310, 361, 391. XVII 1, 454. XVII 2, 213, 243. XVIII 2, 73, 619, 709, 927. XIX 15, 19, 20. The better codices A, B, L, and U confirm this custom of the writer. In one place, that form of the title which inferior codices and editions prefer is found, XV 276 ("it is demonstrated in the books on the use of the parts in the human body"), but I would believe that passage is spurious for other reasons as well.

Otherwise, it is manifest that the words "in the human body" were instilled into the true title for the sake of explanation and were taken from the beginning of the second book.

With these things exposed, nothing remains now but for me to offer public thanks to the Academy of Munich, by whose munificence I was assisted in preparing this edition.
