only the epic and the drama, especially the latter. The new attempts belong under the same general opposites as their contemporary attempts in the field of philosophy. Each can be regarded as the general, in that the particular is only the condition of the repeated position of that general synthesis of all generality and particularity. As soon as one leaves the sphere of form, two cases are possible: one either seizes the general of the intellect, or the particular; the former gives the dogmatic intellectualism a philosophy prioritizing abstract thought, the latter the empirical or sensual system.
