Winckelmann first unveiled the precious remnants of ancient art, especially the plastic arts. Exalted by his intellectual perspective, he penetrates more deeply into art, not so much by reasons as by its inner being; he was especially familiar with the historical side of art. Herder ignited his light from Winckelmann, while Lessing remained stuck on the surface. Goethe is more worthy of Winckelmann. Philosophy gave the content back to the essence through Kant; Kant indisputably has negative merit.
