Junius Moderatus Columella on Husbandry in Twelve Books and his Book concerning Trees (London, 1745) (a very rare work) from the Chatsworth Library, and Mademoiselle Hélène Rousseau for obtaining for me in Paris a copy of M. Upon the death of Professor Forster, the editors of this Library entrusted to me the responsibility of completing the unfinished project. In the circumstances, this assignment naturally extended to the making of a thorough examination of every aspect of the work. The photostats mentioned by my predecessor in the above lines were in due time returned to America and were fully utilized in the process of examination and study. In the checking between these manuscripts, as well as in the verification of references to important earlier editions of Columella, very substantial assistance was furnished to me by my wife, which I desire gratefully to acknowledge here.
