A seal of the City of Boston depicts a cityscape within a circular frame. Above the scene is the motto "SICUT PATRIBUS SIT DEUS NOBIS" May God be with us as He was with our fathers. Inside the circle is "BOSTONIA CONDITA A.D. 1630." Boston founded A.D. 1630 and below the scene is "CIVITATIS REGIMINE DONATA A.D. 1822." Incorporated as a city A.D. 1822.
A circular portrait medallion of Nathaniel Bowditch is surrounded by a wreath. The text around the portrait reads: "NATH. BOWDITCH. OB. MAR. XVI. MDCCCXXXVIII." Nathaniel Bowditch, died March 16, 1838. A banner below the portrait reads "BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY".
