CONICS I.

Apollonius to Eudemus, greetings.

If you are in good health and everything else is going according to your wishes, that would be well; we ourselves are moderately well. At the time when I was with you in Pergamon, I observed that you were eager to see the work I had done on conics. I have therefore sent you the first book, having revised it, and the remaining ones we will send when we are satisfied with them. For I think you do not forget having heard from me that I undertook the approach to these matters after being invited by Naucrates the geometer, at the time when he was staying with us after having come to Alexandria, and because, having worked them out in eight books, I communicated them to him rather hurriedly because he was about to sail, without having finalized them, but rather setting down everything that occurred to us, intending to go through them as a final step. Hence, having now found the time, we are publishing them as they are corrected. And since it has happened that some others of those who have associated with us have also received the first and second books before they were corrected, do not be surprised if you encounter them having a different form.
