on a high rock; so perhaps, because the Ellopians who lived there previously were "mountain-dwellers" (oreioi), this name was given to the city. It is also believed that Orion was raised there and thus received his name. Some say that the Oreitae, who possessed their own city, were attacked by the Ellopians and moved to live with the Histiaeans, and that the single city formed by both peoples used both names, just as Lacedaemon and Sparta are the same. It has been mentioned that in Thessaly, the region of Histiaeotis was named after those who were uprooted from here by the Perrhaebi.
5. Since the subject of Ellopia led us to speak of Histiaea and Oreus, let us speak of the places that follow them. In this Oreus, Cenaeum is near, and upon it are Dium and Athenae Diades, a foundation of the Athenians, situated above the strait leading to Cyna. From Dium, the colony of Canae in Aeolis was settled. These places are around Histiaea, as is also Cerinthus, a small town on the sea; and nearby is the river Boudorus, which shares its name with the mountain on Salamis, the one near Attica.
6. Carystus is situated below the mountain Oche. Nearby are Styra and Marmarium, where the quarry for the Carystian columns is located, which possesses a temple.
