The old city was razed to the ground by the Persians, who, as Herodotus says, "netted" the people with their great numbers when the barbarians surrounded the wall (the foundations are still shown, and the place is called Old Eretria); the modern city was built upon it. The power the Eretrians once possessed is evidenced by the pillar they once set up in the temple of the Amarynthian Artemis. It is inscribed upon it that they provided three thousand heavy-armed soldiers, six hundred horsemen, and sixty chariots for the procession. They also ruled over the Andrians, Tinians, Ceians, and other islands. They received settlers from Elis; for this reason, they were mocked by comic writers for their frequent use of the letter r, not only at the end of words but also in the middle. There is also a village called Oechalia in the Eretrian territory, a remnant of the city destroyed by Heracles; it shares the same name as the Trachinian Oechalia, the one near Triccê, the Arcadian one (which later inhabitants called Andania), and the one in Aetolia near the Eurytanians.
