After the mouth of the Silaris A river in Southern Italy comes Leucania and the temple of the Argoan Hera, Hera associated with the ship Argo built by Jason, and near by, within fifty stadia A Greek unit of distance, approximately 1/8 of a mile, is Poseidonia. From here, as one sails out of the gulf, there is the island of Leucosia, which has only a short passage to the mainland. It is named after one of the Sirens who was washed ashore here after, as the myth tells it, they threw themselves into the depths. Facing the island is the promontory that, together with the Sirenussae, forms the Poseidonian Gulf. Rounding this, one enters another continuous gulf, in which there is a city that the Phocaeans who founded it called Hyele, while others call it Ele—named after a certain spring—but which the people of today call Elea.
