This work aims to offer a comprehensive presentation of Greek culture in its development. In an exquisite form, and in a worthy guise distinguished by its external appearance, the work is intended to show the historical development of this people, who laid the foundations of our modern culture. Particular attention is paid to the artistic features. The intention is to provide a picture that conveys to the reader a vivid insight into the overall nature of this people, by linking political and social conditions in the cities and the state with achievements in the fields of literature, philosophy, and art, and to deepen the understanding of the eternal significance of this culture for all time. Few works have succeeded in bringing the overall picture of antiquity to the educated person with such vividness and scientific fidelity.
The book, in which three experts joined forces in close connection with a pedagogue to solve the set task, arose from the need to carry knowledge of Greek life on a broad basis into the widest circles of our people. The presentation is strictly historical; however, it is free from that scholarly dryness that so often makes access difficult for the layman. A rich treasury of images, selected from the best models, accompanies the text. The layout is exemplary and makes the book a valuable gift for every educated person. It aims to be a faithful companion for visiting museums and exhibitions, an aid for studying classical authors, and a guide for all who want to penetrate deeper into the understanding of the ancient spirit. Thus, the work becomes an indispensable tool for teachers and students, for researchers and friends of antiquity.
The work, which is indeed a masterpiece of modern book production, is well suited to promote knowledge of antiquity in the widest circles. In bookstores, while traveling, in libraries, and in schools, it will be welcomed everywhere with joy, for it fills a gap that has hitherto been painfully felt. Whoever can be inspired by Hellenism in its entire magnitude will find in this book a source of instruction and edification.
