...[Vin]dobonensis The library of Vienna., Paris, and Bologna, I owe a great deal. They allowed the manuscripts preserved by them to be sent elsewhere for my use. Likewise, I thank the directors of the Royal Library of Copenhagen Original: "Hauniensis". and the Laurentian Library, through whose mediation I obtained this favor.

Fate, which was most unkind to those of us who survive as his friends and to science itself, prevented me from giving the thanks I owe in this place to Charles Graux. I made a great part of my Italian journey in 1881 together with him. He assisted me excellently in determining the ages of manuscripts and in other matters of paleography Paleography is the study of ancient and historical handwriting., a field in which he was second to none.
