I have used the following codices in this volume:
I. For the genuine Optics:V = Vienna codex XXXI, 13 (= philos. Gr. 103 Lambecius), 12th century, paper (bombycine) in this section, concerning which see Vol. V, p. XXIX sq. From this source I first edited the genuine Optics in the year 1882 (Litterargesch. Studien über Euklid p. 93—129); subsequently, I re-examined the doubtful passages at Vienna in 1883.
B = Bodleian codex Auct. F 6, 23, paper (bombycine), 13th century. It contains ff. 1—265^r the Elements I—XIII; f. 265^v the beginning of book XIV, but it is deleted; ff. 266—273 the Optics up to p. 60, 17, in a different hand but of the same period. This part of the codex is in very poor condition, such that many things cannot be read; therefore, I wish nothing regarding its text to be affirmed, except what I have explicitly noted. I collated it personally at Oxford.
v = Vatican codex Gr. 1038, parchment, 13th century, concerning which see Vol. V, pp. V—VI. I collated it personally.
Vat. = Vatican codex Gr. 1316, from the books of Fulvius Ursinus, consisting of two volumes. It contains ff. 1—331 (paper, 14th century) the Iliad with a paraphrase; f. 332^r "The property of Alberto Pio, Lord of Carpi"; ff. 332^v—336 are blank; ff. 337—352 (parchment, 15th century) the Optics up to p. 118, 24, by a very recent hand (Vat. m. 2).
