[What an antidote is and the origin of the theriac.] Physicians give the name antidotes original Greek: ἀντίδοτος (antidotos), literally "given against" to those healing powers that are not applied to the body from the outside, but are taken internally to treat ailments. There are three general classes of these medicines.
