Chartier Edition Vol. 13 [871.] ...is of this kind. One must choose the variety that has not yet become bitter from age, as some who prepare theriac original: θηριακή / theriacen; a famous ancient "all-cure" antidote made of dozens of ingredients, including viper flesh are also mistaken in this regard. Because they have always heard the popular saying that everything except wine grows old with time, they use the oldest wine possible. Some do not even correctly guess the quantity, because the exact proportion is not recorded in the pharmacological books. There are two varieties of this wine, and while they do not differ in their potency, the sweeter variety makes the antidote more pleasant. This specific type is called Faustian wine original: Φαυστιανός / Faustianum; a high-quality variety of Falernian wine grown on the middle slopes of the Falernian hills in Campania. Therefore, those who add wine that is changing and turning sour commit an error. Even if the wine were not spoiled on its own, it often turns sour when mixed with the other ingredients of the antidote. In the same way, the oldest Falernian wine makes the medicine bitter, especially when a slightly larger amount is added.
