...they give the devil martyrs and cross-bearers, who even on the best days only plagues, anguishes, and never refreshes those who are his (unless it be with an imagined, fleeting joy that leaves a gnawing worm behind) and thus makes their filth sour enough for them.
The blessed, however, who stand firm, knowing that they must enter into eternal joy through great tribulation on this pilgrimage, are comforted in their greatest anguish. Often, they are comforted to such a degree that, feeling a heavenly foretaste, they do not perceive the pain of the grimness, for God wishes to be with his friends only in need, whereas the devil only makes his own despair, leading them from temporal pain into eternal perdition. If the anguish and plague had no other use for the elect, this advantage would be enough: that during this time, they cannot sin. This is the difference between the cross-bearers of Christ and those of the devil.
