Many have painted Venus and Adonis excellently,
And were indignant that a spirit was missing from their work.
What have these skillfully mixed colors deserved of such importance?
A wonderful mind also exists beneath an abnormal body.
Reason is believed to be the best for generating virtues,
While it nurtures and directs the sharp sparks of nature.
It also tames the indignant necks of the bristling
Quadruped, and does not permit it to swell so savagely.
And it has no less honor than when it conquered the beast
That rose into a hundred throats, hissing dreadfully.
As many statues of the heroes of the flourishing world as the greatest
Expanse saw, and signs placed for men:
Divine wisdom selects as many triumphs for itself.
The mind is the judge of things. The mind is fate by the mind of God.
Learn to be strong in spirit, whoever desires to evade the ignoble,
Whoever desires to strive for great things, and to stand as a divine being in the air.
The ingenious power of the logical teacher, so that you may learn,
Will do this excellently. Seek to make progress from there.
And do not regret having expended hard labor.
Nothing is of such value as to have argued well.
From this, the path opens itself into all split-up arts.
One intellect holds the powers of all of them.
Whatever the world has, to grasp and to recognize the true
Countenances of nature: that is the work of reason.
To use judgment, and to discern fruit in a solid way,
And to be able to use counsel: that is the work of reason.
