PH. I have heard, Teacher, that it is joined with great praise for our Republic that you, with such industry, diligence, and faithfulness, inform the youth not only in other excellent arts, praiseworthy customs, and necessary languages, but most especially in the science of logic. This science is approved by all good men, and is not criticized except by the wicked, the idle, and those ignorant of the truth. Furthermore, it will bring the greatest utility to adolescents who are attentive, diligent, and equipped with an intellect that is not distorted, depraved, or seduced.
OR. I would certainly wish, Philomathes, that what you declare regarding the ornament of the Republic might be thus granted and strengthened by the immortal God. But regarding what you discuss concerning the judgment of good men and the growth of the youth, it is neither yours to judge, nor mine to applaud and assent to that proclamation of yours. If anything is done well by my work, it is done by the grace of God.
