RVLANDUS, the son of the highest chemist Martin, who has served that art, as well as medical science, exceedingly well. I approve of both the clear disposition of his character, which I knew when he was still frequenting the academies, and his erudition and dexterity, now that he has been increased with the highest honors and is practicing medicine by public authority in your most praiseworthy Republic. This is for me a most certain argument that true chemistry has among you not only its ornament, but also its refuge. It is a sign of consummate praise; it is of incomparable authority, as if the family of liberal and honest studies, once resting in the laps of Kings and Princes, could take refuge with you from an unfriendly sea, and not suffer rejection, but be fostered in a most grateful embrace even amidst the tumults and dissensions of the world. It seemed to point to the minds of the learned; receive this work, consecrated to your dignity, and embrace it, inscribed with your honor. It befits you, just as you are famous in other things, not to be ignoble in the patronage of arcane chemistry. Therefore, I do not doubt that this effort of mine will be grateful to your excellence. There are many Republics that do not seek for themselves a memory as famous for the arts of war and justice, as they do for the frequency and assembly of learned men.
