healthy: Which could not have happened to them without the advice and judgment of learned physicians, to whom God has granted such grace and art through much toil and labor. But what kind of abuses and fraud daily occur in this art at the present time is sufficiently evident. For one finds very many runaway rascals, carriage-hands, and bath-attendants, who run from one city to another with their adulterated, stinking treacle and cursed ointments, and not only empty the purses and chests of the common mob, but also bring them to body and life, especially when they take it upon themselves to cut and heal harelips, ruptures, stones, and growths. This is rightly called experimenta per mortes agere to conduct experiments through deaths.
