An elaborate 17th-century alchemical engraving from Heinrich Khunrath's "Amphitheatrum Sapientiae Aeternae" (1602). The left side features a semi-circular diagram divided into wedges, containing Latin and German alchemical text. The hub of this "wheel" is labeled "DECEPTIO" (Deception), and its outer rim mentions "IGNOMINIA" (Ignominy) and "CONFIDENTIA STERILIS" (Sterile Confidence). The wedges represent various paths—some true, some false—toward alchemical goals like the "Catholicon" or "Tincture." To the right of the diagram is a panoramic landscape. It shows a rocky coastline with a lighthouse, ships in a harbor, and figures walking along the shore. In the foreground is a walled town with a large domed cathedral and various figures including scholars in robes. The entire scene is rich with symbolic detail representing the search for wisdom and the "Universal Stone."
