When one sees the orbs of the sevenfold heaven turning, and the moon observing its changes, and ancient suns shining by the laws of age, and winters never ceasing to close, and summers in the fruit-bearing year: when one sees flocks wandering over the mountains, and beasts giving birth to offspring not unlike themselves, nor springs pushed down into the depths by lightning, and nations being born and dying in turn, so that their inhabitant is nowhere lacking; the mind of men resolves many languages into profane words, that there will be no light after the final examination of deeds, but that fates run through eternal laws, and dissolve into shadows, and go under to Stygian underworld/Hell Acheron, whatever is mortal, and do not approach the heavens in turn, so that it might grasp the arbiter of life, and penalties or rewards. And yet the same opinion has not pleased every heart.
