I am joined to you by that best part
of myself. Ensure that this bond of friendship
entered into between us does not die except with us.
As for me—so may our holy Hygeia: the Greek goddess of health and cleanliness, here invoked as a patroness of physicians
love me—I pledge this affection to you:
an affection which was intense (as I swear
by the genius of friendship: "amicitiae genium," a classical reference to a guardian spirit or the divine nature of a bond)
toward you from the very moment I conceived it. And because
it is indeed for the sake of virtue, which is eternal,
I shall nourish it eternally; though it is also
due to your reciprocal love for me, by which
you value and esteem me more than my
original: "mediocritas," a standard expression of modesty used by early modern scholars mediocrity deserves.
Keep your word, I say, and publish those
chemical wonders of yours.
Publish them: lest you seem to have buried the talent: a reference to the biblical Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, implying that God-given knowledge and skill must be shared and increased, not hidden
committed to you by God in the ground.
Do you fear the attempts of certain noisy detractors
to overwhelm your rising Fame?
Laugh, in turn, mock them, and vindicate
yourself from those men with mere contempt,
as you already do. Indeed, crossed out: for you
count it as a piece of good fortune.
