This is the likeness of consummate praise; it is of incomparable authority, to betake oneself to you as if to a most safe harbor from a troublesome sea, the family of liberal and honest studies that once rested in the arms of Kings and Princes, and not to suffer rejection, but to be fostered in a most grateful embrace even amidst the tumults and dissensions of the world. You seemed to designate the minds of the learned; receive this work consecrated to your dignity, embrace it inscribed with your honor. It befits you, just as you are famous in other things, not to be ignoble in the patronage of arcane chemistry. I do not doubt, therefore, that this attempt of mine will be grateful to your Amplitude.
