Thus, since creatures are great and beyond our
eyes, imperceptible and admirable, it necessarily
follows that the Creator is far greater and
exceeds all human understanding, which
anyone can easily grasp. It is therefore
clear and evident to us that God created
all things so that they might serve man, so
that he might recognize the divine benevolence,
hold the Creator and bestower of all good things
in honor, fear Him, and pay Him due thanks
for His gifts. This, however, is observed by
few, alas, since the greatest part of humanity
lives like beasts, rashly and without
knowledge or any memory of a grateful
mind, consuming such great gifts of Divine
bounty in useless waste. But this should not
rightly be tolerated, being contrary to
the Divine will and command, to the entire
course of Nature, and to the teachings and
admonitions of all pious and prudent men.
Since, therefore, it could happen that the most
just God, at last provoked by the treacherous
malice of men, might punish the most impious
life of this perverse world with scarcity of food,
war, and plague.
