men have wasted uselessly, and have
allowed the remnants to be corrupted by rot and
perish: With no one exerting even the slightest
thought as to how such an abundance of such
great gifts might be conserved and kept for
future years, when the scarcity of food might
lead to extreme difficulty:
For each was anxious only for himself and his
own; the abundance of their gifts sufficed
them, and each left his own concern to another,
so that he might provide for himself for the
future regarding the necessities of life:
Thus it happened that what remained of the
prolix divine blessing was, through neglect,
thrown away and lost, and nothing was
saved for the future: Although, however, our
Lord Jesus Christ himself, providing bread
to many thousands of men, commanded his
disciples to carefully keep the remaining
crumbs, so that nothing at all should be lost:
which he doubtless did for no other end than
to teach us to hold the gifts of God in
honor.
But where will those be found who imitate
this and do it? Nowhere, indeed; which can be
excused neither before God nor before
pious men. We surely should not have allowed
so great a bestowal of divine gifts
