An ornamental drop cap 'C' depicts floral scrollwork and a small figure within the frame.I have promised to append a good sauce and condiment to my dishes thus far placed on the table; since these consist of quite excellent and clearly not common sciences, it is entirely necessary that the condiments also correspond to them, and just like the dishes themselves, affect the palate with the sweetness of their flavor. Therefore, just as in the banquets of the Great ones, condiments are not placed before the guests have sated themselves with meats and fish and quieted their hunger, as such condiments are presented to them as vehicles for drinking wine with greater delight, which for the most part procure a sweeter flavor with sugar for all manner of fruits, seeds, and spices.
Thus also, to me, preparing and placing such condiments in this banquet of mine, the task is given only that I should look out for the best sugar and precious spices for myself, which offer themselves only when taken from metals original: "ex Metallis", with Saturn i.e., lead providing the sugar, and the Sun i.e., gold and the Moon i.e., silver supplying the most sweet aroma.
