Garden of Sacred Idylls

It was night, and darkness pressed upon the nations, sent forth
From the cavern of Avernus the underworld,
When GOD, having pitied the hardships of men from on high,
Thus speaks safely from the ether:
Bring forth now the saving face, O Light, bring it forth
On the sacred vertex of Sion.
Restore the day to the lands, and tear apart the dark robes of the night
With clear light.
Now, excited by new splendor, the profane common people
Will follow the divine radiance.
From everywhere the crowds rush, having left the pagan night,
And the paths are swarming everywhere.
The dromedary runs headlong from the Eastern shores,
The Ethiopian camel runs.
