Then, as soon as the soul has become free, unattached, and alive, it brings forth and throws up first a small and very delicate leaf, then a small delicate stalk, on which, after it has set a bud, it climbs ever higher through the help of the warmth of the air and the moisture of the earth, and continues to grow until the proper height of the ears, and brings forth the grains, together with the straw, together with its small husks in which it is hidden, which bloom in their time. Which grain, when it is now perfect and finally ripe, Nature then adorns, as it were, with a gold color.
