You should therefore know that the Subjectum subject/matter or thing that one must take to make our universal medicine truly is a precious matter which is not found on the surface of the earth of living men. It is a bodily spirit or a spiritual body, which is for certain the true salpeter saltpeter of the wise.
To speak properly, it is a fat, heavy, and juicy earth, which is very useful and very precious, quite common to the understanding, and very hidden from the ignorant. This glorious matter is found everywhere in the valleys and level fields, in the caves of the earth, and in the mountains—yes, in one's own house. It is the dew of heaven, the fattiness of the earth, and the precious natural saltpeter of the wise. It is the sticky slime from which Adam was made. In short, our matter is a virgin earth upon which the sun has never shot its rays, even though the sun is its father and the moon is its mother.
The Philosophi philosophers call our virgin earth a wet-nurse of the gods, because from it Sol the Sun/Gold and Luna the Moon/Silver actually come, and indeed all metal. It is also called a bride of the starry heaven, because it daily sends its good influence to her, fully and
