with an appropriate liquid Electuary A medicinal paste made with honey or syrup. or syrup. After taking it, the patient should exercise by walking a little.
original: "GUTTA JEMU." Gamboge is a pigmented resin from Southeast Asian trees, used as a violent purgative.
First, let a tincture be extracted to saturation from the powder of true red sandalwood original: "santali rubri veri" using spirit of wine or wheat. Then, pour this tincture over the powder of Gamboge, and extract it in a warm place; separate it in a bath a water bath or balneum Mariae, and there remains a brittle gum. A dose of 1/2 scruple symbol: $β$ used for 10 grains/half-scruple purges very gently without nausea or vomiting, and I have found it to be excellent. (It is a Noble purgative of our most illustrious [Patron], from the Author's manuscripts.)
Laxative Anise.
Laxative Anise is made when 2 scruples of powdered scammony A harsh purgative resin. (and, if one pleases, mercurius vitae Antimony oxychloride or mercurius dulcis Calomel at discretion) are added to 3 ounces of Anise Confection. Likewise, it does not seem inappropriate if the sugar used for the confection is dissolved with an infusion of flowers of antimony, or Saffron of Metals original: "croci Metall." - an antimonial preparation, or glass of antimony (but in this way they will be stronger Cathartics); they may be sprinkled with sugar of roses during the making, as Croll Oswald Croll, a famous Paracelsian chemist. teaches. Or, if you wish, scammony is prepared in this manner: while powdering, let a few drops of spirit of vitriol Sulfuric acid be sprinkled in, let it be ground thoroughly, dried, and powdered again. The dose of anise is from 1 drachm for infants and others.
Laxative raisins are made by macerating raisins in any purging decoction; once macerated, they are taken according to the quantity of the decoction they have absorbed. If you desire them stronger, add an infusion of flowers of antimony or glass of antimony, or, what is better, Saffron of Metals, at your discretion.
I. Mercurius Dulcis Calomel or the Panchymagogue of Quercetanus Joseph Duchesne, known as Quercetanus, a French physician who promoted "All-Purging" medicines. fortified with Mercurius Vitae, so that 16 grains of the former contain 2 grains of the Mercurius Vitae.
NB. This mixture must be diligently ground smooth upon a marble slab for several hours; for in this way the vomiting power of the Mercurius Vitae is lulled to sleep, and it purges gently through the lower bowels only, along with the Mercurius Dulcis.
II. Pills of corrected flowers of antimony, which purge only through the lower bowels.
III. Emetic Powder, or Mercurius Vitae, or flowers of butter of antimony, which also have a place among emetics, depending on how much one wishes to indulge in both vomiting and purging. Such are the corrected flowers of antimony, or those converted into a buttery oil and precipitated in common water. For the power of vomiting is taken away if they are ground for some time with common Salt on marble; after the Salt has been removed by washing with common water, the remaining powder, exhibited in the usual previous dose, moves only the bowels.
IV. Sol Vitae Sun of Life or the precipitate described by Rhenanus Johann Rhenanus, a German chymist. on pages 34 and 35, described as "the Sun emerging from the well."
V. Mercury of Croll.
VI. Coralline Arcanum of Paracelsus, elaborated in the manner of Basilius Basilius Valentinus, legendary alchemist. or Croll.
VII. Sweet Oil of Antimony. Let antimony be calcined to the highest whiteness, then with vinegar (others take spirit of wine) let the saline essence be extracted in a water bath; let the vinegar be drawn off and the same essence be extracted anew with rain water, and passed through blotting paper several times. By repeating this labor, a most shining Salt is made, which liquefies in a cold cellar and is dissolved into a reddish oil, which is sweet like sugar. 7 drops of this purge the bowels mercifully.
♁ Antimony Antimony fused with Mars Iron, and afterward calcined with sulfur, then by itself as if for making glass, and you have a sweet, astringent oil of antimony.
Of Amber.
VIII. Amber of Antimony. The volatile parts of common Mercurius Vitae can be called forth in a retort with a slow fire and distilled into an oil; if the remainder is fused in a Crucible, there is made from it a glass almost the color of amber. Dose 2 or 3 grains by itself or in an infusion.
Purgative glass of antimony.
IX. ♁ Purgative Glass. Glass of antimony passes into a true laxative chyliste A refined chemical extract. in the following manner: To 1 ounce of powdered Glass of Antimony, instill 1 ounce of the best rectified spirit of vitriol. Mix dili-
gently in a mortar and dry in a small dish over a slow fire; pour on the same quantity of spirit of vitriol again, and dry it again, and repeat this seven times, always ensuring the powder is well dried. Meanwhile, take 1 drachm of mastic A resin from the Pistacia lentiscus tree., pour on it 1 pound of spirit of wine, and digest for 4 hours. Decant the spirit of wine and macerate the prepared glass of antimony in it for 3 days. Then put the flowers or glass with the spirit of wine into a crucible and set the spirit of wine on fire so that it all flames; to do this more effectively, when the material no longer catches fire, place the crucible in a "fire of circulation" original: "igne rotae" - a circular fire surrounding the vessel so that all the spirit of wine evaporates. Let the remaining powder be dried on a glass plate over a slow ash fire for 12 hours. Dose from 4 grains.
These said Medicines, so that they may be taken with greater pleasure, can be mixed with conserve of Roses or any other, or Confection of rose sugar, to a proper consistency. While it is still warm, let it be taken out of the dish and spread upon a clean table, and with a knife marked to the size of tablets; in each tablet put 4 grains of the glass or powdered flowers of antimony. Thus the tablets are fitly formed, which you then dry. Or take rose sugar with a little rose water and pound it in a mortar to make a mass. Take as much of this as you like, mix in the dose of prepared antimony, and with a fit instrument form a tablet by hand, and proceed thus until you have the quantity. Or let flour be worked with rose water and cinnamon added to make a mass. From this, form two small cakes in the shape of a wafer, bake them in their own instrument, and sprinkle into each a dose of the prepared Glass of Antimony. Or we make "muscatel pears" A delivery method where the medicine was hidden inside a prepared fruit. and in each let a hole be made, into which the dose of the said purgative is placed; let them be closed exactly again with their own lid and a "moist-dry confection" be made. The same can be done in preparing other fruits.
Laxative Mercury.
Take as much quicksilver Liquid mercury as you wish; pour over it oil of Sulfur made by the bell A method of catching sulfur vapors under a glass bell., or oil of vitriol, so that it stands a finger's breadth above it. Then place it in warm sand until the warm material coagulates in the vessel, which will happen within 3 hours; let the flask be covered only with paper so that the volatile spirits may have an exit. Then, having broken the flask, take away the material, and if by chance any quicksilver remains at the bottom, separate it. Put the powdered material in a Crucible and digest with an open fire for an hour, so that it all glows red in the fire. Then, removing the Crucible from the fire, cast the material into hot water, and it will turn into a very yellow powder; after discarding the water, let it be washed with more water poured on, and afterward dried. Then let it be put into a flask and digested with spirit of wine for 25 days. Then let the spirit of wine be decanted, and let the Mercury be placed upon a glowing iron so that it is perfectly dried. Dose from 6 to 10 grains.
NB. Sublimated Mercurius Dulcis Calomel given at 16 grains purges more in a very cacochymic Full of "bad humors" or toxins. body than 30 grains in another body that is not so cacochymic.
White Mercury Panacea.
Take Mercury and dissolve it in Aqua Fortis Nitric acid; the solution is poured into salt water so that the Mercury is precipitated to the bottom. Having been freed from all saltiness by repeated washings, it is administered with Turpentine from 5 to 10 or 16 grains.
Corrected Flowers of Antimony.
First, let white flowers of antimony be made in the following way: take a large pot or earthenware cucurbit A gourd-shaped distilling vessel. perforated near the bottom; once placed in the furnace, let 4 or 5 other perforated vessels be applied to it, receiving one another in turn. At the top, let a beaked Alembic A distillation cap with a spout. be placed. Let a slow fire be lit until the lower vessel gradually glows white-hot. Then, through the hole left in the bottom pot, let half an ounce of powdered antimony be thrown in; once thrown in, the "flowers" Sublimated powder are immediately raised into the pots placed above. Let the hole then be exactly closed with a fit lid. Leave them for an hour while continuing the fire so that the lower pot glows; when the hour has passed, throw in another half-ounce of powdered antimony, and leave it again for an hour. Let this labor be repeated as often as seems fit. In the beginning, some phlegm Watery distillate usually distills through the Alembic; when it has finished dripping, let the beak be closed with paper, and the sublimation continued as said. To the flowers...
