He is depicted in a three-quarter view, facing the viewer, wearing a voluminous curly wig and a dark academic or professional robe with a white cravat. He sits at a table, holding a quill pen in his right hand and resting his left hand on an open book. Behind him, a bookcase filled with rows of bound volumes is visible, partially obscured by a draped curtain with tassels. A small inkwell sits on the table beside the book. In the open book, several titles are inscribed on the right-hand page. Below the portrait is a decorative cartouche containing Latin text.
