Hermetic Science, examine all the treatises, which amount to little less than two thousand five hundred? God preserve me, that is not my thought. Just as one does not have to read all the books of theology to be a skillful theologian, nor all the books of law to be a great jurist, it is sufficient, in order to form oneself in the Hermetic Science, to read the most skillful artists with attention, and to choose among the others those who have treated the principal parts with success.
All those who have written were not adepts; even those who were spoke very obscurely. One must therefore be very careful not to believe them both at their word; the ones, because they did not know enough to instruct me; and the others, because they did not want to let us know what they knew.
