PROLEGOMENA

ON THE DEFINITION OF NUMISMATICS,

ESPECIALLY GERMANY,

AND THE PARTS OF THIS TREATISE.

§ I.

The science of coinage, or numismatica numismatics, contains the knowledge of coins, both ancient and modern, and considers them according to their origin and progress, age, nations, material, size, types, rarity, and other circumstances.

§ II.

This type of study is not only pleasant and delightful but also exceptionally fruitful and useful: it illustrates and clarifies Philology study of language and literature, all History, Chronology, Geography, Genealogy, Rites, and Antiquities, and indeed other types of study as well.

§ III.

It would be superfluous to demonstrate its excellence and utility at greater length, since authors who specifically treat this distinguished subject have already done so abundantly.
