Father Johann Rudolf Meyer, Citizen of Aarau: A Memorial

Rescue. He was heard. A noble-minded relative took on the debt. This event, like a ray of heavenly light, fertilized the rich seed of goodness planted within him and awakened the urge for development. The consequences of this showed themselves more and more throughout his entire life in his tireless industriousness, in active sympathy for the hardships of others, and in unshakable trust in God. He often and fondly thought of this incident. Many years later, he wrote to a relative who had fallen into poverty:

"Why do you complain? Who knows, without this, perhaps your children would be less brave and industrious. It seemed like a misfortune to me, too, when my blessed father was led to the edge of the abyss by guarantees. But surely, when I now feel and consider all of that properly; it has contributed not a little to my true happiness."
