If my book is still imperfect despite all these excellent aids, it proves how entirely inexhaustible the subject is, and over how many things ignorance or doubt still prevails. I have therefore intentionally provided not a description, but a journey. The former seemed to me to promise far too much; the latter, however, allowed me to remain silent where I knew nothing at all,
