to take a small remuneration in foreign better thoughts for the many self-made ones of which he becomes tired, which in the end also helps to protect the reader from monotony in style and view.

That one finds small reasons for reproach regarding the spelling here and there can be called quite forgivable given the wavering rules thereof: a few times old habit has won over better theory against my will. In individual expressions or turns of phrase, something Swiss and Upper German may also have escaped unintentionally; in others, however, such has been included on purpose. The book language must not solidify; it must be ready to take up the new, and it takes it better, perhaps, from existing dialects than from the whim of not-too-fortunate improvers of the language, who strive to enrich it daily with fresh concoctions. Moreover, every language is the mirror of its people and its surroundings, so that it is most bearable when Swiss words help to describe the Swiss nature.

Of the copperplate engravings for this work, I have nothing to remark other than that they were all drawn anew on the spot
